Maritime and Coastguard AgencyToday we celebrate the brave men and women of our Merchant Navy. Their sacrifice and service were vital for keeping Britain afloat during both World Wars, but their contribution doesn’t stop there. Our seafarers are responsible for 95% of imports, bringing necessities such as food and fuel to UK shores in all weathers, every day. Merchant Navy Day gives us an opportunity to remember, reflect and say thank you to our seafarers. Our top priority is ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our seafarers. We’re committed to making sure they have access to the right training, support, and development opportunities throughout their career. Alongside 30 other industry associations, as part of the Maritime Skills Commission, we are working to improve and modernise cadet training. Funding has also recently been increased to cover 50% of training costs for eligible cadets and ratings, as part of the commitment to protect and support seafarers. MCA Chief Executive Brian Johnson said:“Today we raise the Red Ensign in support and recognition of all our seafarers, past and present. Your sacrifices, service, and dedication are not only vital during times of great crisis, but also for our day-to-day lives, as you transport necessities like food and fuel. “Merchant Navy Day is an opportunity for us to share a much-deserved message of thanks. Your wellbeing and safety are top priorities, and we are committed to making sure that seafarers receive the training and support they need to deliver, from cadetship onwards, ensuring a rewarding career path with access to many opportunities for development. “Seafarers – we see you, we remember, and we thank you.”Director of the Merchant Navy Training Board and Maritime Skills Commissioner Kathryn Neilson added: “Our seafarers carry out incredibly important work, bringing more than 95% of all trade to our island. For that, and for all their contributions, we say a big THANK YOU. We greatly value their work and want to ensure that UK seafarer training and education programmes deliver training that is fit for purpose and future proof. “Through the Maritime Skills Commission’s Cadet Training and Modernisation Project we are doing just that. Creating seafarer training programmes that will provide newly qualified officers with the transferrable skills they need to compete in a highly competitive global market, while also creating new and exciting career pathways to highlight all the opportunities within the maritime industry.” Maritime and Coastguard Agency.Merchant Navy Day / Red Ensign.
