Hi Im trying to trace the family if of a Thomas Richard Lewis who's grave I visit twice a year when I visit The Gambia West Africa. He was Killed 17th August 1945 aged 17yrs. He was a cadet on the M.V DEIDO and came from Barry. I have been putting flowers on his grave now for 10 years and would love to think that his family knows he,s not forgotten.
Apprentice / Cadet Thomas Richard Lewis, aged 17 of 25 Westward Rise, Barry, Glamorgan died of Cerebrospinal fever on 17th August 1945. There is an entry confirming date of death in the official logbook for the ship - Place of death recorded as 12.58N 17.27.5W.
Sarah Jane Morgan:
This has had me in tears - but happy tears! If it is indeed him, Thomas Richard Lewis of 25, Westward Rise Barry was my mother's cousin. I have a lovely photograph of him in his uniform that was in my grandmother's house (104 Westward Rise) and I remember her telling me about him when I was young. His father was my Uncle George and his mother my Auntie Mary. I never knew her because she was so devastated at her son's death that she committed suicide not long after he died. His sister, Mary, was living in Llandeilo until a few years ago, but I believe she has now died, unfortunately. My mother would have known him, but she has advanced Alzheimer's so would not be able to remember. If this is the grave of my mum's cousin, may I thank you so much, on behalf of my family for your kindness, but also for trying to get in touch. It would be lovely to speak to you, if that is at all possible.
