Newydd
15 April 2015 Did you know? The paddle steamer PS Barry saw action during both World War One and World War Two and now, over a century since she left the port after which she was named, some of her artefacts have finally come home. We donated money to this cause to help bring back the salvaged helm, wheel and brass windows after she was sunk in a bombing raid off Sunderland on 5 July 1941, and lay undiscovered until 2010. It's great to hear that our donation has helped bring these pieces of history home to Barry where they belong. Newydd FB (Newydd Housing Association)LINK

The picture of the PS Barry that I have used most, show's her covering for the Waverley of the day, The then Waverley was moth balled on the South Coast after WW1 and the Barry though never Waverley class stepped in. Dunkirk required every vessel and the old Waverley was called upon, she sailed under her own steam and name, sadly she was lost at Dunkirk. Our Barry was renamed again: HMS Snaefell: she was a heroine of Dunkirk similar to her brave record in WW1 and the Dardenelles. She continued to serve until lost herself to enemy aircraft bombing. The original picture was promised years ago to be housed in a museum if we ever got one and now is in safe keeping with both the model and the artifacts. K.
