Ian Howell / Barry At War Museum As Commonwealth War Graves Commission War Graves Week continues I would like to remember Francis William Hammill of the Merchant Navy.
Francis was the son of William and Mary Hammill of Barry Dock.
He served on The SS Fort Marin as a Greaser. He passed away on 30th May 1946.
Merchant Sailors out of Barry predominantly worked below decks as Trimmers, Greasers, Firmen and Donkeymen.
These rolls were potentially extremely dangerous because if a ship was hit by a torpedo there chances of getting off the ship were greatly reduced.
