A few dates for people to ponder over. A little closer to the time i will raise them as events in the events page.
Barry branch meeting will be last Wednesday in April at 1400 Libs Club Barry, where the following will be discussed.
Events 2025
Wednesday 7th May
The Welsh Government is organising a National Service of Thanksgiving to he held at Llandaff Cathedral on the 7th May. Attendance will be by invitation only but we are keen to get representation from all those who gave service - from those who served in the armed forces to those on the Homefront such as, Land Army, Bevin Boys and air raid wardens – and many more. If you know of anyone who you think would like and be able to attend, please contact: tcabinetcommunications@gov.wal
VE Day 80thAnniversary a big event being held at the Senedd on 8th May, which has just received Welsh Government approval. MNA will be involved. Beth Evans the RBL Community Engagement Officer for Wales who is running with much of the setting up, attended the MNA Wales National meeting in Caerphilly 12thFebruary and gave details. We will need a Barry Branch Standard bearer for this one, at the moment, our nominated Standard Bearer Huw (Huggy) Lovering will be doing this. It will be invitation only and places are at a premium, our only surviving WW2 Veteran, Barry Branch Chairman Joe Norton will be there, accompanied by Peter or Mike along with standard bearer. If there is room for others we will let members know. Watch this space.
Thursday 8th May
On Thursday 8th May the Royal British Legion (RBL) are holding a national commemoration event in the Senedd sponsored by Darren Millar MS. The event will be by invitation. The RBL aims will be to reflect on the breadth of contributions from across our Armed Forces, the wider commonwealth and others who served our country on land and sea during the conflict. Further information is available from Beth Evans at the RBL -bevans1@britishlegion.org.uk
VE day Tea party. All saints church 17th May. The Royal British legion will be holding this event. It will be a ticketed event, a casual afternoon, no Standard etc needed. We will know more next few months.
85thAnniversary of Dunkirk at MN Memorial Barry between 26th May and 4th June.
This is a joint event Royal British Legion and MNA Wales Barry. Though all the leg work/organisation will be carried out by the Barry branch of the Royal British Legion – so many thanks to Teresa and Co at Barry RBL. It is seen as joint event and will have our standard stamped on all the paperwork. The MN was highly involved in the evacuation. Civic offices will cater for everybody afterwards. It will be a weekday event not a weekend one.
Rededication service at Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery 29th May: a service to mark three new headstones of sailors. A local chap Ian Howells is organising this and more details will follow. There may well be a requirement for a member of MNA Wales Barry branch to do a short reading, and Standard bearer presence will be required. Again, watch this space.
MNA Wales Summer outing Sometime in the summer there will be a paid for trip over to SS Great Britain or a River Avon cruise from Bristol. But more likely to be SS Great Britain. The Transport is being fully funded by the MNA Wales Cardiff branch. Our Barry branch committee will look at funding the ticket costs for Barry branch members. So, a free day out!
The following s from John Evans MNA Wales Cardiff.
Mike, enjoyed the phone chat this morning and looking forward to getting Bus prices from you. SS Great Britain was initial thought but, talking to Alan Speight, suggestions to an alternative would also be welcome. Alan will bring the trip idea up at the next Newport meeting end of month. The SS-GB page on the Browser gives two ticket prices £22 or £11 for a "Late entry ticket" which covers 1430 hours to 1700 hours only. I think the second option would be more acceptable, but we would need to have something to eat before the visit to the ship, however, we would get back home in the light with a summer trip.
Raise the idea at your next meeting and say that cost of travel will be covered, and this will depend on size of bus required.
My idea is the Bus picking up in Barry then Cardiff [Bay?] Newport then onto Bristol and returning same route. Be nice if the Bristol people can join us too.
